2026 March monthly report


Highlights

  • Exceptionally cold statewide—several locations recorded their coldest March on record, with widespread temperatures 10–20°F below normal.
  • Persistent Arctic pattern drove prolonged cold, with Fairbanks experiencing historic extremes and no above-freezing days all month.
  • Mostly dry conditions statewide, with many areas receiving less than half of normal precipitation; drought persists in parts of Southcentral and the Seward Peninsula.
  • Juneau set records for snowfall, including its snowiest March and highest seasonal total on record.
  • Arctic sea ice reached the lowest maximum extent in the satellite record, continuing long-term decline trends.
