Highlights

Nome reported a mean monthly temperature of 14.9°F, 9.1°F above normal. This is a very strong deviation from the January long-term mean of 5.8°F. The maximum temperature reported on the 11th was 40°F, a new daily record, the old one was 37°F placed in 1942. Nome also set a second high temperature record the previous day, the 10th, of 39°F, the old record was 36°F set in 1929. The minimum temperature for the month was -27°F recorded on the 22nd. Precipitation was above the mean again this month, totaling 1.16", 26% above normal. A total of 15.5" of snowfall was measured in January, 34% greater than normal, and 5.9" of that total fell on the 1st of the month. The average wind speed at the Nome Airport station was 12.1 mph, and the highest gust was reported as 52 mph on the 24th.
