Fairbanks September 2015


Highlights

Fairbanks's September mean monthly temperature was 42.4°F, 2.5°F below the expected value of 44.9°F. The warmest temperature for the month was observed on the 3rd at 69°F, while the minimum was nearly 50°F colder, at 20°F on the 26th.

3.74" of precipitation were measured, 2.64" above the 1.10" normally expected. Contributing to this were two daily records set: on the 13th 0.55" was measured, breaking the old 1992 record for that day by 0.06", and on the 29th the 0.74" measured broke the 1954 record by 0.24". An incredible 20.9" of snow were measured, 19.1", or 1061% above the normal 1.8" of snow. This is a new monthly snowfall record, breaking the old 12.9" set in 1992. Two daily snow records were broken; on the 25th 6.7" of snow was observed, shattering the old 1996 record for that day by 5.9", and on the 29th, the same day that broke a daily rainfall record, 11.2" were observed, breaking the old 1972 record by 4.2". This snowfall also broke the record for snow for any September day, previously held by September 13th, 1992, with 7.8". The average wind speed was 4.0 mph, while the maximum was 31 mph on the 10th blowing from a southerly direction.
