Anchorage January 2017


Highlights

Anchorage had a mean monthly temperature of 13.6°F in January, 3.5°F below normal. The lowest temperature for the month was -15°F occurring on both the 18th and 19th, while the highest temperature was 43°F on the 26th.

Precipitation was higher than normal, with 1.71” measured, 0.98” above the expected value. Snowfall was also much higher than normal with 31.7”, 181% above the normal of 11.3”. About a third of the snowfall (10.3”) fell on a single day, the 21st, which set a record on that day, breaking the old 1981 record of 3.8”. Three other snowfall records were also set: on the 13th, the 4.0" broke the 1990 record of 2.5". Then on the 16th, a total of 5.3" topped the 3.7" from 2008. Finally, the 2.2" on the 20th broke the 2011 record of 1.9". The highest wind speed was 43 mph from a southeasterly direction on the 26th while the average wind speed was 5.4 mph.
