Arctic Sea Ice Extent: May 2, 2024

May 2, 2024:  The  sea ice has continued to decrease this week at a higher rate of 3.15% (as opposed to last week’s decrease rate of 1.95%), from the level on 04/25/2024 of 13.809 M km2 to 13.374 M km2 for this week.

Plot Compiled by: Howard J. Diamond, PhD; Climate Science Program Manager at NOAA’s Air Resources Laboratory

The negative sea ice anomaly this week was greater than the anomaly of -0.156 M km2 on 04/24/2024 to a greater negative anomaly of -0.251 M km2 on 05/02/2024, and so more anomalously negative for this time of year.
