Arctic Sea Ice Extent: July 31, 2025

July 31, 2025: The Arctic sea ice has experienced a much greater decrease rate for this week of 13.73% (last week’s decrease rate for 8 days was 9.07%), from the level on 07/24/2025 of 7.197 M km2 to 6.209 M km2 for this week.  The sea ice extent for 2025 is now the 2nd lowest sea ice extent on record for this time of year eclipsed only by the year 2020 when the lowest sea ice extent was at 6.034 M kmon 7/31/2020.

The negative sea ice anomaly this week was greater than the anomaly of -0.8205 M km2 on 07/24/2025 to a greater negative anomaly of -1.2482 M km2 on 07/31/2025, and so more anomalously negative for this time of year.
