Arctic Sea Ice Extent: July 25, 2024

July 25, 2024:  The Arctic sea ice has continued to decrease this week at a greater rate of 10.90% (as opposed to last week’s decrease rate of 10.49%), from the level on 07/17/2024 of 7.644 M km2 to 6.811 M km2 for this week.  This is the second double digit percentage weekly sea ice loss in a row.  After a fairly mundane rate of sea ice loss this year, for this time of year, we are now at the 3rd lowest amount in the record just above the levels in 2018 and 2020.

The negative sea ice anomaly this week was higher than the anomaly of -0.997 M km2 on 07/17/2024 to a greater negative anomaly of -1.122 M km2 on 07/25/2024, and so more anomalously negative for this time of year.
