Arctic Sea Ice Extent: February 27, 2025

February 27, 2025: The Arctic sea ice has experienced a very small decrease for this week at a rate of 0.64% (as opposed to last week’s increase rate of 1.66%), from the level on 02/20/2025 of 13.904 M km2 to 13.815 M km2 for this week.  So after two after two straight weeks of a small amount of growth in sea ice extent, we may be on the precipice of the seasonal shift to the melting season – it is after all nearly mid-March.  Arctic sea ice has been at or near record low levels for the past few weeks.

The negative sea ice anomaly this week was higher than the anomaly of -1.0951 M km2 on 02/20/2025 to a greater negative anomaly of -1.2703 M km2 on 02/27/2025, and so more anomalously negative for this time of year.
