Arctic Sea Ice Extent: December 11, 2024

December 11, 2024: The Arctic sea ice has continued to increase this week but at a lower rate of 2.62% (as opposed to last week’s increase rate of 6.22%), from the level on 12/05/2024 of 10.714 M km2 to 11.002 M km2 for this week.

Plot Compiled by: Howard J. Diamond, PhD; Climate Science Program Manager at NOAA’s Air Resources Laboratory

The the negative sea ice anomaly this week was essentially equal to the anomaly of -1.0477 M km2 on 12/05/2024 to an essentially equal negative anomaly of -1.0478 M km2 on 12/1/2024, and so equally anomalously negative for this time of year to last week’s value (that is two times in just a few weeks that has happened – strange!)
