Arctic Sea Ice Extent: August 29, 2024

August 29, 2024:  The Arctic sea ice has continued to decrease this week but at a lesser rate of 4.75% (as opposed to last week’s decrease rate of 8.49%), from the level on 08/22/2024 of 4.805 M km2 to 4.577 M km2 for this week.  For this time of year, we are now essentially tied for second lowest amount in the record with the level from 2020.

The negative sea ice anomaly this week was less than the anomaly of -1.272 M km2 on 08/22/2024 to a lower negative anomaly of -1.173 M km2 on 08/29/2024, and so a bit less anomalously negative for this time of year.
