Arctic Sea Ice Extent: August 22, 2024

August 22, 2024:  The Arctic sea ice has continued to decrease this week but at a greater rate of 8.49% (as opposed to last week’s decrease rate of 5.23%), from the level on 08/15/2024 of 5.251 M km2 to 4.805 M km2 for this week.  For this time of year, we are now essentially still tied at the 3rd lowest amount in the record with the level from 2020.

The negative sea ice anomaly this week was greater than the anomaly of -1.212 M km2 on 08/15/2024 to a slightly higher negative anomaly of -1.272 M km2 on 08/22/2024, and so a bit more anomalously negative for this time of year.
