Arctic Sea Ice Extent: August 15, 2024

August 15, 2024:  The Arctic sea ice has continued to decrease this week but at a lesser rate of 5.23% (as opposed to last week’s decrease rate of 11.22%), from the level on 08/08/2024 of 5.541 M km2 to 5.251 M km2 for this week.  For this time of year, we are now essentially tied at the 3rd lowest amount in the record with the level from 2020.

The negative sea ice anomaly this week was lower than the anomaly of -1.355 M km2 on 08/08/2024 to a lower negative anomaly of -1.212 M km2 on 08/15/2024, and so less anomalously negative for this time of year.
