Arctic Sea Ice Extent: April 20, 2023

  • April 20 2023:  Over the past week, the sea ice has had a very small net decrease, and since last week, by a rate of only 0.45%, from the level on 04/13/2023 of 14.076 M km2 to 14.012 M km2 for this week. In the daily values over the past week (pasted below, in km2 ) can see that there was still some up and down variability this past week.

The negative sea ice anomaly this week was higher than the anomaly of -0.692 M km2 on 04/13/2023 to a lesser negative anomaly of -0.477 M km2 on 04/20/2023 and so less anomalously negative for this time of year.
