Arctic Sea Ice Extent: May 31, 2024

May 31, 2024:  The  sea ice has continued to decrease this week at a lower rate of 2.53% (as opposed to last week’s decrease rate of 3.21%), from the level on 05/23/2024 of 12.411 M km2 to 12.097 M km2 for this week.

Plot Compiled by: Howard J. Diamond, PhD; Climate Science Program Manager at NOAA’s Air Resources Laboratory

The negative sea ice anomaly this week was lower than the anomaly of -0.173 M km2 on 05/23/2024 to a lesser negative anomaly of -0.163 M km2 on 05/30/2024, and so less anomalously negative for this time of year.
