Juneau January 2016

Highlights

Juneau's mean monthly temperature for January was 34.9°F, 6.6°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 47°F on the 27th, which also broke a record for that day by 1°F, originally set in 1961. The previous day, the 26th, also set a record high for that day with a temperature of 45°F, breaking the old 2011 record of 43°F. The lowest temperature for the month was 16°F on the 8th.

Precipitation was 1.18" higher than normal for the month, with 6.53" measured and 5.35" expected. Contributing to this was the 0.87" that fell on the 26th, which broke the old 2009 record for that day of 0.66". However, there were only trace measurements of snowfall, while a heavy 27.7" is normally expected. This ties with the January 1942 record low snowfall of just a trace. The average wind speed was 6.7 mph, while the highest was 59 mph on the 26th from a southeasterly direction.
