Arctic Sea Ice Extent: October 24, 2024

October 24, 2024: The Arctic sea ice has continued to increase this week with a very hefty and greater rate of 20.19% (as opposed to last week’s increase rate of 9.31%), from the level on 10/17/2024 of 5.674 M km2 to 7.109 M km2 for this week.  In the time that I have been doing this monitoring, I do not believe that I have ever seen a jump like that; the data took a pretty steady rise across the past 7 days; not sure what the dynamics are behind that, but will see what I can find out a bit more.

The negative sea ice anomaly this week was quite a bit lower (as might be expected with the information above) than the anomaly of -1.901 M km2 on 10/17/2024 to a lower negative anomaly of -1.169 M km2 on 10/24/2024, and so less anomalously negative for this time of year than last week.
