May 22, 2025: The Arctic sea ice has experienced a smaller decrease for this week of 2.41% (last week’s decrease rate was 3.76%), from the level on 05/15/2025 of 12.548 M km2 to 12.246 M km2 for this week. The sea ice extent for 2025 to date is now in second place being inched out by the sea ice extent for this time of year from 2016.

The negative sea ice anomaly this week was lower than the anomaly of -0.4197 M km2 on 05/15/2025 to a lesser negative anomaly of -0.3852 M km2 on 05/22/2025, and so less anomalously negative for this time of year.
