Arctic Sea Ice Extent: March 27, 2025

March 27, 2025: The Arctic sea ice has experienced a decrease for this week at a rate of 2.13% (as opposed to last week’s increase rate of 0.98%), from the level on 03/20/2025 of 14.333 M km2 to 14.028 M km2 for this week.  The sea ice extent right now continues to be at the lowest on record for this time of year. The NSIDC called the seasonal maximum on March 22 and so we are now in the melt season.

The negative sea ice anomaly this week was higher than the anomaly of -0.6767 M km2 on 03/20/2025 to a greater negative anomaly of -0.8692 M km2 on 03/27/2025, and so more anomalously negative for this time of year.
