Arctic Sea Ice Extent: July 17, 2024

July 17, 2024:  The Arctic sea ice has continued to decrease this week at a greater rate of 10.49% (as opposed to last week’s decrease rate of 9.17%), from the level on 07/11/2024 of 8.540 M km2 to 7.644 M km2 for this week.  This is the first double digit percentage loss this year.

The negative sea ice anomaly this week was higher than the anomaly of -0.668 M km2 on 07/11/2024 to a greater negative anomaly of -0.997 M km2 on 07/17/2024, and so more anomalously negative for this time of year.
