Arctic Sea Ice Extent: January 5, 2023

January 5, 2023: Over the past week, the sea ice has continued to increase and at a bit greater rate than last week, of 1.90%, from the level on 12/29/2022 of 12.597 M km2 to 12.841 M km2 for this week.

Plot Compiled by: Howard J. Diamond, PhD; Climate Science Program Manager at NOAA’s Air Resources Laboratory

The negative sea ice anomaly this week was greater than the anomaly of -1.001 M km2 on 12/22/2022 to a more negative anomaly of -1.104 M km2 on 01/05/2023 and so more anomalously negative for this time of year.
