Arctic Sea Ice Extent: January 12, 2023

January 12, 2023: Over the past week, the sea ice has continued to increase and at a bit greater rate than last week, of 2.93%, from the level on 01/05/2023 of 12.841 M km2 to 13.229 M km2 for this week.

Plot Compiled by: Howard J. Diamond, PhD; Climate Science Program Manager at NOAA’s Air Resources Laboratory

The negative sea ice anomaly this week was slightly less than the anomaly of -1.104 M km2 on 01/05/2023 to a lower negative anomaly of -1.010 M km2 on 01/12/2023 and so a bit less anomalously negative for this time of year.
