Arctic Sea Ice Extent: August 1, 2024

August 1, 2024:  The Arctic sea ice has continued to decrease this week but at a lesser rate of 8.37% (as opposed to last week’s decrease rate of 10.90%), from the level on 07/25/2024 of 6.811 M km2 to 6.241 M km2 for this week.  For this time of year, we are now tied at the 2nd lowest amount in the record in 2012 and just above the lowest amount for this time in 2020.

The negative sea ice anomaly this week was higher than the anomaly of -0.112 M km2 on 07/25/2024 to a greater negative anomaly of -1.142 M km2 on 08/01/2024, and so more anomalously negative for this time of year.
