Anchorage May 2017

 

Anchorage had a mean monthly temperature of 47.9°F this May, 0.1°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 70°F on the 31st, while the lowest temperature was 32°F on the 5th.

 

Precipitation was above normal, with 1.06” measured, 47% above normal. The average wind speed was 8.5 mph, while the maximum was 47 mph from a southerly direction on the 3rd.

Barrow May 2017

 

The mean monthly temperature for Barrow in May was 24.6°F, 3.5°F above the normal of 21.1°F. The highest temperature for the month occurred on the 27th at 36°F, while the lowest was 5°F occurring on the 1st.

 

Precipitation was heavy at 0.94”, 422% above the normal of 0.18". It was the wettest May on record for Barrow just topping the 2014 record of 0.90". Snowfall was also heavy at 10.5”, 289% above the normal of 2.7". The total snowfall of 2.4"on the 25th set a new record, breaking the old 1973 record of 1.0". The average wind speed was 12.0 mph, while the highest value was 36 mph from a southwesterly direction on the 26th.

Delta Junction May 2017

 

Delta Junction’s mean monthly temperature was 48.8°F in May, 1.2°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 67°F on the 16th. The lowest temperature recorded this month was 32°F on the 26th.

 

Precipitation was reported at 1.13", 0.23" above expected amount of 0.90". The total rainfall of 0.26" on the 14th broke the old daily record of 0.24" for that day set in 1982.

Fairbanks May 2017

 

Fairbanks had a mean monthly temperature of 49.8°F this May, 0.4°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 72°F occurring on the 16th, while the lowest was 29°F on the 1st and 2nd.

 

Precipitation was near normal with 0.59” reported, 0.01” below the normal of 0.60”. The highest wind speed was 30 mph from a westerly direction on the 24th, while the average wind speed was 4.9 mph.

Juneau May 2017

 

The mean monthly temperature for Juneau in May was 49.1°F, 0.5°F above the normal for the month. The highest temperature for the month was 71°F occurring on the 16th. The lowest temperature for the month was 33°F occurring on the 5th and 10th.

 

Precipitation was above normal with 5.19” measured, 1.79” above normal. A new daily precipitation record was set on the 8th with 0.65", breaking the old 2001 record of 0.58". Then on the 21st precipitation totaled 1.53", shattering the 0.39" record from 1968. The highest wind speed was 45 mph from a southeasterly direction on the 21st while the average wind speed was 7.8 mph.

Ketchikan May 2017

 

Ketchikan had a mean monthly temperature of 50.5°F, 1.9°F above the normal for May. The highest temperature for the month was 72°F occurring on the 28th, while the lowest was 34°F on the 1st, 2nd and 4th.

 

Precipitation was heavier (35%) than normal, with 11.03” measured and 8.20” normally expected.

King Salmon May 2017

 

King Salmon had a mean monthly temperature of 45.1°F this May, 0.9°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 71°F occurring on the 31st, while the lowest was 24°F on the 5th.

 

Precipitation was light with 1.07” recorded, 0.18” below normal. The average wind speed was 8.9 mph while the highest wind speed was 43 mph from an easterly direction on the 6th.

Kodiak May 2017

 

May’s mean monthly temperature for Kodiak was 45.2°F, 0.9°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 66°F occurring on the 11th, while the minimum was 32°F occurring on the 26th, and this set a new record low for this day, breaking the old record of 34°F set way back in 1939.

 

Precipitation was above normal and measured at 7.17”, 128% of the normal of 5.62". The total precipitation on the 2nd of 1.39" set a daily record, breaking the 2008 record of 1.18". Then on the 6th, the total of 1.92" broke the old record of 1.53" set in 2005. The average wind speed was 9.9 mph while the highest wind speed was 48 mph from a northeasterly direction on the 2nd.

Nome May 2017

 

Nome had a mean monthly temperature of 38.7°F this May, 1.9°F above the normal of 36.8°F. The highest temperature for the month was 60°F on the 12th, while the lowest value was 25°F on the 15th.

 

Precipitation was above normal with 0.94” measured, 9% above the normal of 0.86". The total rainfall of 0.30" on the 26th broke the old daily record of 0.22" set way back in 1918. The average wind speed was 8.3 mph while the highest was 42 mph from a northeasterly direction on the 7th.
