Fairbanks January 2017

Fairbanks’ January mean monthly temperature was -9.5°F, 1.6°F below normal. The highest temperature for the month was 25°F on the 26th, while the lowest was -51°F on the 18th.

 

Precipitation was 0.38” higher than normal, with 0.96” measured and 0.58” expected. Snowfall was 165% of normal with 17.0” measured, and 10.3” normally expected. The average wind speed was 1.9 mph, while the highest was 43 mph from a southwesterly direction on the 5th.

Anchorage January 2017

Anchorage had a mean monthly temperature of 13.6°F in January, 3.5°F below normal. The lowest temperature for the month was -15°F occurring on both the 18th and 19th, while the highest temperature was 43°F on the 26th.

 

Precipitation was higher than normal, with 1.71” measured, 0.98” above the expected value. Snowfall was also much higher than normal with 31.7”, 181% above the normal of 11.3”. About a third of the snowfall (10.3”) fell on a single day, the 21st, which set a record on that day, breaking the old 1981 record of 3.8”. Three other snowfall records were also set: on the 13th, the 4.0" broke the 1990 record of 2.5". Then on the 16th, a total of 5.3" topped the 3.7" from 2008. Finally, the 2.2" on the 20th broke the 2011 record of 1.9". The highest wind speed was 43 mph from a southeasterly direction on the 26th while the average wind speed was 5.4 mph.

Barrow January 2017

The mean monthly temperature in January for Barrow was -0.3°F, a substantial 13.1°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 36°F on the 1st, while the lowest was -36°F on the 19th. The high temperature set a record for that day, breaking the old 1928 by 6°F. Two other high record events were set: the 34°F observed on the 2nd broke the 1968 record for that day by 4°F and the 30°F on the 3rd broke the old 2004 record for that day by 1°F.

 

Precipitation was 0.47”, 0.34” above normal, while snowfall was measured at 4.7”, 2.1” above the expected value. 3.1” of this snowfall fell on the 1st, breaking the old 1924 record for that day by 1.5”. The average wind speed was 13.8 mph while the highest wind speed was 59 mph on the 5th from a northwesterly direction.

Delta Junction January 2017

Delta Junction had a mean monthly temperature of -1.7°F in January, 0.7°F less than normal. The highest temperature was 38°F on the 26th, while the lowest was ‑47°F on the 18th.

 

Precipitation was higher than normal with 0.50” measured, and 0.31” normally expected. The total precipitation on the 16th of 0.20" set a record for that day, breaking the 1952 record of 0.19".

Juneau January 2017

January’s mean monthly temperature for Juneau was 29.8°F, 1.5°F above the normal 28.3°F. The highest temperature for the month was 46°F on the 26th, which also set a record for that day, breaking the old 2016 record by 1°F. The lowest temperature was 9°F on the 11th.

 

Precipitation was measured at 6.27”, 0.92” above normal, while snowfall was just 3.7”, just 13% of the expected 27.7”. The highest wind speed was 52 mph from a southeasterly direction on the 27th while the average wind speed was 9.2 mph.

Ketchikan January 2017

The mean monthly temperature for Ketchikan in January was 35.9°F, 1.0°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 48°F on both the 27th and 28th, while the lowest was 19°F.

 

Precipitation was recorded at 16.65”, or 108% of the normal amount.

King Salmon January 2017

King Salmon’s January mean monthly temperature was 12.7°F, 3.5°F lower than normal. The highest temperature for the month was 44°F on the 1st, while the lowest was -27.0°F on the 22nd.

 

Precipitation was lighter than normal, with 0.15” measured and 1.02” normally expected. Snowfall was also lighter than normal, with 3.0” measured, just 29% of normal. The average wind speed was 7.7 mph while the highest wind speed was 56 mph from a southeasterly direction on the 30th.

Kodiak January 2017

Kodiak had a mean monthly temperature of 28.2°F in January, 2.3°F below normal. The highest temperature for the month was 44°F on the 1st, while the lowest was 7°F on both the 17th and 22nd.

 

Precipitation was just 36% of normal, with 2.95” measured and 8.29” normally expected. Snowfall was just over half of normal with 7.4” recorded and 13.0” expected. The average wind speed was 9.8 mph while the highest wind speed was 50 mph from a northwesterly direction occurring on both the 5th and the 15th.

Nome January 2017

The mean monthly temperature for Nome in January was 5.8°F, 0.6°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 2°F above freezing, at 34°F on both the 1st and 26th, while the lowest temperature was -28°F on the 18th and 19th.

 

Precipitation was 0.72”, 0.22” below normal, while snowfall was also lighter than normal, with 10.4” measured and 12.7” normally expected. The average wind speed was 7.8 mph while the highest wind speed was 46 mph from easterly direction on the 30th.
