August in Fairbanks was warmer than normal, with a monthly mean of 59.4°F, or 3.3°F above the long-term mean of 56.1°F for the month. The highest temperature was 85°F on the 1st and 7th, and the high on the 7th is a new daily record, breaking the 1968 record of 83°F. The coldest temperature for the month of 34°F was observed on the 25th. Temperatures were above normal for the first 19 days, and then tended below normal till the end of the month. In terms of the average temperature, August 2013 was the 11th warmest on record (107 years). August saw six days where the temperature hit 80°F or warmer, bringing the total to 36 days for the summer, and breaking the record of 30 set in the summer of 2004.
August was the only month this summer were precipitation was above normal, with 2.02", just 7% above of the expected amount of 1.88". The 0.68" that fell on the 23rd was a new daily record, breaking the 0.50" record from 2003. The average wind speed was 4.0 mph, with the highest wind speed recorded on the 29th at 26 mph, from a westerly direction.
Anchorage was 0.7°F above the normal temperature, with a mean of 57.4°F for the month of August. On the 13th the warmest temperature of the month was recorded at 71°F. The coolest temperature for the month was 41°F, observed on the 25th. Temperatures were close to normal throughout the month.
Precipitation totaled 5.42" for Anchorage, 67% above the expected amount. A total of 1.23" of rain fell on the 11th, breaking the old daily record of 0.82" from 1991. The fastest wind speed for the month was 44 mph, observed on the 3rd, from a southeasterly direction, while the average wind speed was 6.2 mph.
Barrow was 0.6°F above its long-term with a monthly mean of 39.6°F. The warmest temperature for the month was 63°F, recorded on the 11th. The lowest temperature for the month was a chilly 28°F recorded on the 30th.
Precipitation was heavier than normal; a total of 1.35" was recorded, 29% more than the normal amount of 1.05". A gust of 35 mph was the fastest wind speed for the month, measured on the 6th from an easterly direction, and the average wind speed for the month was 10.2 mph.
In August, Delta Junction had a monthly temperature of 57.9°F, 3.1°F higher than the long term normal. The coldest temperature recorded this month was a chilly 30°F on the 25th, ending the growing season for many plants. This is further a new daily record low, breaking the 1993 low of 31°F. A nice 84°F was the highest temperature for the month, occurring on the 1st.
Precipitation was a mere 78% of normal, with just 1.48" recorded, 0.41" below the normal of 1.89".
Juneau measured a monthly temperature of 57.9°F, 2.0°F warmer than the normal mean of 55.9°F, 0.3°F above July and the 8th warmest August on record. The highest temperature for August recorded on the 12th at 78°F. The coldest temperature for the month was on the 29th, with 43°F recorded.
Precipitation was light for Juneau, with 4.90", or 86% of the expected amount of 5.73" observed. The 1.18" of rain on the 18th was a new daily record, topping the 1970 record of 0.94". The average wind speed was 6.4 mph, with a highest wind speed of 28 mph recorded on the 31st, blowing from an easterly direction.
Ketchikan was 2.0°F above the long-term mean of 58.0°F, with a monthly mean of 60.0°F (the same mean as July). The warmest temperature for the month occurred on the 1st, at a nice 75°F, while the coldest temperature was 48°F recorded on the 22nd, 28th, and 29th.
Precipitation was near than normal, with 9.84" recorded, 0.03" above the normal amount of 9.81".
In August, King Salmon was 1.2°F above the normal temperature of 54.6°F, with a monthly mean of 55.8°F. Temperatures were mixed around normal throughout the month with no new records set. The 18th held the warmest recorded temperature for the month at 71°F, while the 41°F on the 24th was the lowest temperature.
Precipitation was heavy at 82% (2.43") above the expected amount with a total of 5.38" recorded. Helping generate the high total was a new record of 0.99" on the 8th, breaking the 1974 record of 0.54". Then the total rain of 0.93" on the 21st broke the 1973 record of 0.67". The average wind speed was 8.5 mph, while the highest wind speed was 44 mph on the 6th, blowing from an easterly direction.
Kodiak was just warmer than normal this August, with a monthly observed temperature of 56.1°F, which was 0.9°F warmer than the long term mean. The warmest temperature for the month (69°F) was observed on the 23rd, 24th, 25th. The coldest (40°F) was recorded on the 8th, which is also a new daily low record, breaking the old record of 41°F reached in 1974, 1973 and 1970.
Precipitation was more than double normal, with 9.29" reported, 104% above of the normal amount. Kodiak only had seven days without rainfall. The average wind speed was 7.8 mph, with a peak wind speed of 39 mph from a northeasterly direction on the 6th.
Nome was warmer than normal for August, with a monthly mean of 53.0°F, 2.9°F above the expected mean of 50.1°F. Temperatures tended to be just above normal until just before the end of the month. The warmest temperature for the month was observed on the 7th at 72°F. The coldest temperature of the month was 33°F, recorded on the 29th.
Precipitation was heavy with 4.21" recorded, 0.99" more than the expected amount, and precipitation was reported on 24 days of the month. The average wind speed was 7.3 mph, while the fastest wind speed for the month was 32 mph from a southeasterly direction on the 25th.
